Let's talk with Sine Brixen

For this first interview, we meet Sine Brixen, founder of the brand AYM. Combining Scandinavian functionality with ecological awareness, AYM offers a breath of fresh air to the jewelry world. In constant evolution, research and creation, AYM tries to do better at each new collection. It's a brand you'll continue to see here.

Who are you and what do you do?

My name is Sine Brixen and I am the owner and designer at AYM.

Where do you come from?

I grew up at the Countryside in Denmark, but have been living in Copenhagen for the last 20 years.

What is your background?

I´ve studied fashion design, business and marketing, and have worked many years in the fashion and design industry in Copenhagen.

Why do you do what you do? (Why did you choose this discipline?)

When I worked as a buyer for a fashion store in Copenhagen, I really saw the potential for the category jewellery & accessories, I really liked the idea of collections with a longer life on the shelfs and I also found it to be the most sustainable category in the store next to the fast pace and life of the fashion collections.

Who are the people who have profoundly influenced your career?

I would have to say my husband, he is a musician and I admire him for never compromising in his work and constantly working on new exciting projects. He is really a big support and an endless inspiration for me.

Where do you find inspiration?

I have always been dedicated to researching new materials and new innovative techniques, and I love playing with new colour combinations and to explore exciting architecture and design.

What is your creative process?

I am constantly collecting inspiration for new designs, and my collections are often created over time by the inspiration I get by biking in Copenhagen or when travelling.

What is your daily routine when you work?

My studio is located very near my home, so most days I go very early in the morning get a coffee and often start the day by answering emails and check all the boxes on my to do list. This way I can clear my head and be creative in the afternoon. I have a habit of listen to music or podcasts while working.

Which artist from the past would you most like to meet?

It would have to be Nina Simone, she is for me one of the most important artists and I would love to hear her stories going up in North Carolina.

Which artists are you currently following and why?

I feel that there are so many young talents, and I am very curious by nature so I like to follow and get inspiration from both local underground artists and leading International artists.

What is your latest purchase in decoration?

I like to mix new designs with vintage finds, and my latest purchase was a complete set of vintage Holmegaard wine glasses at a countryside flea market.

What is your greatest pleasure in life?

I know it might sound as a cliché, but spending time with my husband and our two kids is really my favourite thing. I feel that the past and current lockdowns have for me also been a reminder of how much I appreciate slowing down a little bit and making time to do stuff together.

What are your 3 favorite addresses (food, drink, shopping, museum, …) in your city?

I would definitely recommend the natural wine bar Gaarden & Gaden located in my neighbourhood, it is super relaxed with lovely food and they always play great music.

Another favourite spot is DAC (Danish Architecture Centre) I can easily spend a whole day exploring the various exhibitions, enjoying a coffee and the overview of Copenhagen from their roof top café and they have one of the best design stores in Copenhagen are located there too.

Lastly I would recommend biking to an area called Reffen, driving by the canals and discover the creative and vibrant area with galleris, wood markets and the industrial vibe is really special.

What is your biggest dream?

World peace would be nice.

A word about your future projects?

I am really focused on building sustainable collections and exploring new sustainable materials in the future. And I am very excited to proceed with creating interesting pieces and at the same time do my best to minimise the footprint I leave behind with my brand.
