Pickle Christmas decoration
The famous Christmas cucumber.
The Christmas pickle is a Christmas decoration in the shape of a pickle. It's related to an American tradition, allegedly of German origin, of hiding this decoration in a Christmas tree.
The Christmas pickle tradition is most present in the American Midwest, where a significant number of people have German origins.
This ornament is the last one placed in a decorated tree on Christmas Eve, so it can be hidden among the needles. The first child (or adult of course) to find it receives an extra gift, gets to unwrap his or her presents first, and/or receives good luck for the coming year.
The city of Berrien Springs, Michigan is the self-proclaimed "Christmas Pickle Capital of the World". It holds a festival in early December, with a parade, during which fresh pickles are distributed.
